With The Middle Distance, Yudi Sewraj proposes
an escape from a world regulated and smothered by mechanized
work by using a counter-manoeuvre of manual work and imagination.
Against the rapidity of a world in continual evolution,
he contrasts a return to slowness that allows for the
recreation of a calm, silent space, propitious to dreaming.
The Middle Distance begins with the noisy image
of trucks and steam shovels working busily away. A worker,
the operator of one of the machines we have seen, goes
home and begins to dig a hole, with a shovel, in his yard.
The hole will lead to the centre of the world and allow
him to enter a parallel universe.
Born in Guyana in 1968, Yudi Sewraj immigrated to Canada in 1975. He studied visual arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, then moved to Montreal, where he lives and works. His videos have been presented at art events in Canada, the United States, and Europe. His works are included in collections in Canada - including the National Gallery of Canada - and in Italy.
