As artist Thomas Kneubühler remarks, today there is nothing
to distinguish - in appearance, at least - the multimedia
designer, the medical secretary, and the archivist when
they are working at their computers. In the series Absence,
we encounter the absorbed faces of people whose gaze is
lost beyond the frame of the image. Their absence of expression
and of relationship with the photographer and the public
is irritating, as if they were rejecting us, possessed
by some obscure activity to which we are not invited.
With no distinctive signs other than similar poses and
attitudes, the bodies of these young workers seem emptied
out, completely swallowed up in their professional activity.
Thomas Kneubühler was born in Switzerland, and he currently lives and works in Canada. After studying photography in Europe, he decided in 2000 to continue his training in Montreal, following up on a residency that he had had in that city in 1996. His work has been in solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal, and he is represented in a number of Swiss collections.
