Nicolas Baier's piece Oli raises the question
of the deeply intricate connection between rest and work
and their coexistence, as well as the absurdity of the
general tendency to separate the time devoted to human
activities into distinct, successive blocks. We see a
man sleeping in a bed, whose feet are active in a workshop.
Is work haunting his dreams, or are dreams haunting his
work? Baier addresses the notion of time through a surprising
condensation. Playing on juxtaposition, contraction of
time, and stretching of perception, the artist observes
the elements that make up contemporary life and reorganizes
them in scenarios of his own invention.
Nicolas Baier lives and works in Montreal. His work has
been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada,
including at Galerie René Blouin in Montreal and TPW Gallery
in Toronto in 2001, and in the Montreal Biennale in 2000.
Also in 2000, Baier won the Prix Pierre-Ayot, awarded
for excellence in a young artist. His work has been published
in Canadian contemporary-art magazines. He is represented
in various collections, including that of the Fine Art
Museum of Montréal.
