ASCII Alphabet by Dorion Berg combines two alphabets:
the binary alphabet (0 - 1) of computer-programming language
and the traditional alphabet as illustrated in schoolbooks
of the 1950s and 1960s. In the clash of these two worlds,
Berg reveals the changes in our relationship with the
world through the abstract languages that we use. Beginning
and ending with the annoying noise of a modem in the process
of hooking up, this work, with minimalist graphic and
sound qualities, runs full speed through its inexorable
logic, its short history of the simplification of information
and its vehicles.
Dorion Berg is pursuing a program of interdisciplinary
studies in Montreal, where he recently presented sound
sculptures in a solo exhibition at Galerie SKOL. His video
ASCII Alphabet won the Prix Vidéoformes, awarded
at the Vidéoformes 2001 event, the 16th International
Festival of Video Art and Multimedia in Clermont-Ferrand,
France, and the people's prize, "V is for video" category,
at the 13th Annual Images, Festival of Independent Film
and Video, held in Toronto in 2000. |
