In the suburbs, there are people wanting nothing but to burst out of their monotonous environment. But this environment leaves indelible traces in childhood memories–scents, colours, materials–and provokes emotions and desires–loneliness, boredom, growing up in tranquility, and then, finally, leaving for the city, the world.
Yet, the artistic works of these children of the sixties and seventies is not distanced from their ambient culture, but play an active part in it. The photographers look at cultural dimensions dismissed for their banality : daily life among teenagers in Vancouver (Karin Geiger), the ups and downs of young male prostitutes and drug addicts (Jules de Niverville), family life in the Montreal suburbs (Maureen Rodrigues-Labrèche), empty apartment-building lobbies (Chris Gergley), women in their twenties (Caroline Sweeling Teo), bungalows being built on deforested lands (Susan Dobson), small houses and bowling clubs (Alan Hoffman), obsolete interiors (Karin Bubas), ansd the night life in the quiet neighbourhoods of Montreal (Éric Lamontagne). Each turns his or her camera toward the world with informed curiosity and a great knowledge of the culture of the image and its devices.
Exhibition produce by VOX, centre de diffusion de la photographie, presented at « Bitume/Bitumen » 99 Festival international de photographie à Bruxelles from September 12 to October 10, 1999.
